Chippenham Hospital Opens Wound Healing Center

Richmond, VA, January 13, 2009 – CJW Medical Center’s Chippenham Hospital opened a Wound Healing Center for the care of complex, non-healing wounds. The new center, modeled after the nationally recognized Wound Healing Center at Retreat Doctors’ Hospital, also houses two Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy chambers.

“The Wound Healing Center at Chippenham Hospital will give new hope to even more patients suffering with chronic wounds, whether that means saving a limb or salvaging the function and appearance of a complex injury,” said Joseph V. Boykin, Jr., M.D., Medical Director of the Wound Healing Centers. “This comprehensive program will combine modern technology with a team of highly-trained healthcare professionals.”

While most wounds eventually heal with standard care, there are those chronic wounds that require more extensive treatment. The Wound Healing Center provides an elective outpatient service to care for those patients with chronic wounds still not responding after four weeks of conventional wound treatments. These types of wounds can include: non-healing diabetic foot ulcers, irradiated skin, osteomylitis and complications of radiation therapy. The center will also provide outpatient treatment of some minor burns.

Patients will also have access to HBO therapy, a treatment that combines an oxygen-enriched environment with high atmospheric pressure to force oxygen into the blood plasma. This process enhances the ability of white blood cells to fight off infection and helps grow new blood vessels. HBO therapy has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness (“the bends”).

The Wound Healing Center team will work in tandem with a patient’s own physician and physician referrals are required. Once a part of the program, each patient will receive an individualized treatment plan and access to team of specialized surgeons (plastic, general, vascular and orthopaedic), endocrinologists, infectious disease specialists, nurses, home health providers, diabetic counselors, social workers and rehabilitation therapists.
